“Hemp oil and CBD oil differ in what part of the plant they come from and how they are used. Hemp oil is from seeds and is used as a protein supplement and in lotions and soap. CBD oil is from plant flowers and leaves. It is used primarily for medicinal purpose, such as treating inflammation.” – Lisa Reiss Cohen (Area Director at Kannaway)
So what I’ve come to learn is that much of the confusion is due to the different naming that has been tossed around by the industry (sometimes on purpose but mostly because it’s still a bit of the wild west) and with the FDA getting involved it’s only made it more complicated as there is generally known terminology, but now there are also legal definitions. And they don’t necessarily match up. But that’s for another blog.
Let’s start with Hemp Seed (or Hemp Oil). This oil is made by cold pressing the small brown seed of the hemp plant. It’s usually used for culinary purposes and has a naturally mild nutty flavor. You can use it pretty much anywhere you might use olive-oil as it has a similar consistency and low heat threshold. It’s also about 25% protein (without a whole lot of calories – cool).
It is rich in amino acids, fiber, Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, and a number of beneficial vitamins and minerals, like A and E and zinc. Because it is so chock full of the good stuff, it’s also used in a lot of hair and skin products.
I remember getting a travel kit of Hempz products a long time ago and didn’t really even think twice about what made it so special. But all those fatty acids really help to nourish and moisturize your skin. But… these products don’t contain CBD oil. And on a side note, neither do any of the products on Amazon, because they haven’t actually approved the sale of products containing CBD on their e-commerce site. If you find something you believe that does, most likely its being done on the sly and Amazon will soon shut them down.
Now, about that CBD oil, it is an extract made from the stalks, leaves, and sometimes flowers of hemp varieties that are naturally high in CBD (cannabidiol). CBD oil contains all the many essential vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids found in hemp seed oil, as well as additional elements like terpenes, flavonoids, and cannabinoids like CBD.
CBD is only one of many cannabinoids found in hemp extract, but it has been the most studied and is truly having a heyday in multiple formats like tinctures, liquids, capsules, vape oil and hair and skin products. Mainly due to its natural wellness and balancing effect on the body. We’ll continue learning about what exactly a cannabinoid is and why it effects the body. Hint: the body has an endocannabinoid system and produces its own cannabinoids that interact with it.
For those not in the know of how to pronounce scientific terms (my hand is raised) cannabidiol is pronounced
canna – like a ‘can a’ beans
bi – like ‘bid’ on that eBay item, drop the ‘d’
diol – like I’m about to ‘dial’ her number, although some folks like to say this more Game of Thrones style ‘die all’
Hopefully you’re getting something out of the blog and if you are please leave positive feedback! And if not, let me know what else you want to learn about!
